Marco Minnemann - The Green Mindbomb
Marco Minnemann, a musician's musician, a drummer's drummer, he certainly lives up to all of these superlative analogies. The Green Mindbomb is my first exposure to this German progressive/fusion percussion sensation. I may as well start by saying this cd features incredibly talented musicians playing dangerously technical, and intense music. And along with that, some humor, female vocals, and oddmetrical candences abound. Minnemann, as the bands leader, takes a road less driven approach, apart from the convenient fusion offerings of major label quota fulfillments, he writes with a no compromise conviction that allows he and his bandmates to flourish in some incredibly original and alluring musical environments. Taking perhaps an influential page from prog/fusion visionary - Frank Zappa, Minnemann would have been a perfect fit in any of Frank Zappa's bands, his flare for the zany, quirky, unconventional, and obnoxious, along with his mesmerizing drumming talents, are all of the ingredients found in some of Zappa's best and most well-received recordings. But don't let me mislead you, I am not convinced that Minnemann is attempting to recreate, or mimic the master of Zappa-esque, a relatively unknown sub-genre of progressive rock. I feel he is merely extrapolating much the same way artists like Mike Keneally, The Fowler Bros., Mats / Morgan, French TV, Miriodir and some others have. There is a huge sound to this music, both from a band arrangement viewpoint, as well as production standards. A serious audiophile production to be sure, and one that will make your components sing. Marco, like Zappa is surrounded by stellar musicianship, bringing some not so well-known, but certainly impressive and well deserving players into his musical world, and also like Zappa, he writes music that enables them to make a definitive statement through performance on every song. Those in search of music that challenges you in many ways, and is very original will be well pleased to discover this innovative musician and his offerings. (MJ Brady - proggnosis).
