Tom Coster - The Forbidden Zone (1994)

Review by Scott Yanow
For this excellent outing (his third project for JVC), keyboardist Tom Coster performs 11 originals plus "Lover Man." Although his fusion-oriented music is full of funky ensembles, there is more variety than expected. Coster shares the solo space with tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, and the fiery guitarist Scott Henderson, creating a colorful and sometimes unpredictable program of music.

Credits:
Jeff Andrews - Bass, Bass (Electric)
Bob Berg - Sax (Tenor)
Dennis Chambers - Drums
Tom Coster Keyboards, Producer, Mixing, Synthesizer Bass
Scott Henderson - Guitar
Alphonso Johnson - Bass (Electric), Fretless Bass
Karl Perazzo - Percussion, Conga, Timbales, Tympani [Timpani]
Raul Rekow - Conga, Chant, Chekere, Bata

Tracks:
01 In the Beginning - Coster - 3:43
02 Jazz Lament - Coster - 4:42
03 Shall We....?! ? - Coster - 4:51
04 Father-Daughter - Coster - 5:21
05 Lover Man - Davis, Ramirez, Sherman - 5:16
06 Voyage to Nowhere - Coster - 5:50
07 Waste Land/The Jam - Coster - 5:12

Grafitti - Good Groove (feat. Dennis Chambers, Haakon Graf, Gary Grainger and Ulf Wakenius)

Grafitti - Good Groove is a collaborative band consisting of: Dennis Chambers on drums; Haakon Graf on keyboards; Gary Grainger on bass and Ulf Wakenius on guitars. Lipstick Records was first approached by Dennis Chambers, who had met us through several of our productions. The album had been released before in Norway and Japan, but had never been distributed and really promoted anywhere else in the world. Most of the tunes were written by Haakon Graf - who also organized the project. The musical concept of the band is very straight-forward: the energy and virtuosity of progressive rock combined with jazz harmonies and funk rhythms. The band toured live in Europe and the USA and will be playing together again as soon as the busy schedule of the members allows it.

Vital Information - Come On In

Come On In is the 11th release from the all-star soul/jazz/funk/fusion super group Steve Smith & Vital Information. The group features the incredible line-up of guitarist Frank Gambale (Chick Corea Elektric Band), keyboardist Tom Coster (Santana), bassist Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham) and drummer Steve Smith (Journey, Steps Ahead). Included in the package are extensive liner notes by renown author Bill Milkowski, who writes, "Vital Information continues to hone its 'American music' direction while staking out some adventurous new territory. With this third VI recording to showcase this line-up, the listener is invited to a veritable banquet of sounds to satisfy a wide variety of tastes. From slamming funk and syncopated second line grooves to seriously swinging, uptempo B-3 burners, South Indian Carnatic inspired jams and sizzling fuzoid romps, these seasoned veterans cover a lot of bases on Come On In and do it all in such convincing fashion. Instrumental Guitar (Electric/Jazz).

Scott Henderson, Steve Smith & Victor Wooten - VitalTech Tones I & II

Guitarist Scott Henderson, drummer Steve Smith and bassist Victor Wooten have teamed up to show that great fusion lives, on Vital Tech Tones. There's a lot of electricity generated when these three giants get together. Yes, there are chops galore, so the weak-hearted among you might want to stay on the sidelines. For those brave enough, however, there await blazing grooves, blistering guitar and virtuoso solos that must be heard to be believed. From the heavy opening groove of "Crash Course" it is evident this project was not meant for the Adult Contemporary Happy Jazz crowd. From buzz saw-like power chords to soaring lead runs, Henderson's guitar work is stunning. Smith's thundering solos are evidence enough why he is at the top of his field, and Wooten is the most acrobatic bassist you'll find in the fusion firmament. The slamming "Snake Soda" features all three in a masterful performance of complex meters and solo feats of strength. Other powerful tracks include the slinky "Everglades," the Steve Morse sound-alike "King Twang" and the coolest rendition of Coltrane's "Giant Steps" in a long time.VTT2, is a fusion masterpiece in which they take their musical interplay to the next level. The end result is a virtuosic display of intuitive musicianship that pushes the envelope established by their critically acclaimed first album. VTT2 has everything from pure improvisational numbers ("Putainin' Tuh...", "Time Tunnel") to a hyper 180-beats-per-minute groove ("Nairobe Express") and harmonic marvels ("SubZero", "Chakmool-Ti"). VTT2 represents this trio's submission to the 2000 fusion renaissance. Instrumental Guitar (Electric/Fusion). (guitar9).PS. I can die after listening to Henderson's solo in Catch If You Can!

George Duke - Dukey Treats (2008)

George Duke's debut for Heads Up International, "Dukey Treats," will be out on store shelves on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The album cover features chocolate miniatures, including a piano. It's so Ghiardelli Square. The veteran keyboardist/composer is offering up 12 treats, er tracks, on this release. Bassists Christian McBride and Byron Miller, percussionist Sheila E, drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, guitarist Jef Lee Johnson (late Grover Washington, Jr. sideman) and trumpeter Michael "Patches" Stewart are three of the top-line guest stars on the album. The vocalists on the CD are an incredible array of talent, ranging from Rachelle Farrell to Howard Hewett, Teena Marie to Jonathan Butler to Josie James, Lynn Davis and Napoleon "Napi" Brock.
The opening track is a high-energy number called "Everyday Hero." "A Fonk Tail" pays homage to the Parliament/Funkadelic era of the 1970s. "Creepin'" is a remake of a song that originally appeared on Duke's 2002 BPM release "Face The Music." Duke's top keyboard solo, in my opinion, is on the closing track, "Images Of Us." As usual, it sounds like another winner from George Duke, the venerable master of piano-driven funk.

Finesoul ~ In my opinion i tought this was going to be another typical Funk/R&B Album but it sounds dope to say the least. Tracks like "I Tried To Tell You" & "Somebody Laid It On Us" reminiscence the old isley brothers songs. This is something worth checking out even if you think the cover paints a different picture. Last words... Grab it!

Genre: jazz | Label: Heads Up Records | mp3 @ 242 vbr | 01:05:54 | 114,71 MB

Eleven of the twelve tracks on Palmystery are Victor Wooten originals, but he shares writing credits on a couple of tracks with Amir Ali and Joseph Wooten, respectively. Some of these are recent charts, worked into the recent Wooten tour. The lone cover is Horace Silver's “Song for My Father.”

Wooten says he rarely completes a song that he writes, welcoming guest musicians to interpret his music their way. On Palmystery, they certainly catch the spirit. And that is what makes this music truly enjoyable and memorable.

From the Artist
"We wanted to make a bass record with a sound that would be somewhat unexpected to the listener," says Stanley Clarke, the elder statesman of the three-man crew, all of whom share songwriting credits on the recording. "The biggest hurdle was to make a record with three basses - very low-end instruments, by definition - that would still be as musical as possible, and I think we achieved that." "Vic had had this idea to do a bass thing a while back, but we really didn't know when we'd do it," Marcus Miller explains. "After we jammed at the award ceremony, it was clear that it would be pretty easy to do musically. Each one of us found a space to operate that didn't compete with the other. We fell into it pretty naturally. I saw Stanley at the airport the next day and said, `You know we should do this soon, right?' he agreed. We knew Vic was down, because it was his idea in the first place." Victor Wooten was definitely down: "That performance made us realize how easy it was to play together," he says. "We knew that we had to do it again. We were able to naturally find our own space with and around each other. That's not always easy, especially when three people are all playing the same instrument."

Product Description
SMV is a bass supergroup formed in 2008. The group's name comes from the initials of each of its members, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten. SMV's debut release is the "Thunder" album. Marcus Miller (bass clarinet, synthesizer, electric bass); Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, electric bass) and Victor Wooten (electric bass).

"Bernhard Lackner is an exceptional talent both as a bassist and composer that you will be hearing a lot more from in the future. His debut CD release, 'Those Days' demonstrates a musical maturity that extends well beyond his years; a unique and diverse collection of tunes that are the perfect backdrop for his 6 string bass sensibilities." (Adam Nitti)

"Bernhard Lackner's work on 'Those Days' sounds like someone with several records already under his belt. Both compositionally and in his playing, his choices are mature, confident, musical, and always serve the song in question. He just knows what to do on the bass, period." (Bryan Beller)

Jeff Richman & Another Language - Himalaya (1985)

This is a long out-of-print release ripped from vinyl to 2 tracks. The original artwork from LP cover is varied and lists the artist as 'Jeff Richman & Another Language'. In my opinion it is Jeff's best work ever and showcases some of the biggest names from the West Coast fusion scene.

Jeff Richman - guitar

Steve Smith - drums
Susan Marder - vocals
Walfredo Reyes - drums

REVIEWS

Is it there are not enough good singers, that so many artists decide to leave the singer out and make an instrumental album? I have heard and reviewed several of them in the past weeks. Most of them tended to jazz / jazz rock / fusion, so I figured with the next one: yep, more of the same. Boy, am I relieved the second studio album of Jing Chi is somewhat different! Jing Chi is a power trio: Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Robben Ford (guitar), Jimmy Haslip (bass) and their second studio effort, 3D, comes out with a harder edge than their debut album. Besides the three, several guest musicians add their elements to the total sound, thus adding some ambient parts to the music. Although the fusion elements are around, there is also a distinct blues feel to the album, but also a more (prog) rock touch, such as in "Time Is A Magazine," with hints of King Crimson. I like the heavy drums and sharp guitar here. Haslip adds a funky bass to it and the many hooks and changes, make it a bit of a weird song, but a nice one. One songs stands out in a crowd: "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine." Interestingly enough, this song is not even composed by Jing Chi, but a cover of Blind Willie Johnson and believe me, this song alone justifies the purchase of the album! Cover or not, Jing Chi gives maybe their best performance here. Also this is the only vocal track, with none other than Robert Cray on vocals and guitar. In 14:38 Jing Chi brings their version of this song and it is fantastic! A nice blues rhythm and such great guitarparts, I'm glad the song lasts that long. The only drawback, again, is the music is not exactly close to progressive rock, although some parts are. Still, this is a very good album and worth a try. If you want to give any of the fusion rock albums a try, I'd go for this one. With a strong production, the album sounds great and as I said, it has a few gems on it. Jing Chi's 3rd album is their finest work to date as these three musician's musicians reach uncharted musical territories. Master drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, Bass phenom Jimmy Haslip and Guitar legend Robben Ford combine their musical genius for another blistering set fueled by unbelievable ensemble and solo instrumental sections and extended jams that push the outer limits of jazz/blues/fusion. © 1996-2008, Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates
The third Tone Center release by Jing Chi (a musical synergy between renowned guitarist Robben Ford, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Jimmy Haslip) is part jazz/fusion, part Jamband, and part blues rock, as the trio crosses musical boundaries over the eight instrumentals and one vocal track (with guest vocals by Robert Cray). On Jing Chi 3D, these three players contribute a virtuoso's command of their instruments, bring out the best in each others work as they play off each other during tradeoffs between phenomenal soloing and light ensemble segments. Frank Gambale - "Show Me What You Can Do" (1998)

Frank Gambale (guitar); Stuart Hamm (bass); Steve Smith (drums). Recorded at Neverland Studio, Marin County, California. Includes liner notes by Frank Gambale. What happens when you throw three virtuosos together in a room and tell them to create something that showcases their abilities and is also interesting to listen to? Tone Center Records found out when they commissioned the fiery Aussie guitarist Frank Gambale, bass monster Stuart Hamm and drum god Steve Smith for the self-explanatory SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO. The result is a power trio album of tremendous strength and envelope-pushing musical madness. From the thunderous opening of "Bad Intent," it's obvious these boys didn't waste time getting to the good stuff. The testosterone is flowing heavily into the driving groove of "The Promise" as Gambale's piercing guitar surfs over Smith and Hamm's relentless pounding. Later, things take a on somewhat lighter shade on the slinky "Sink," until a powerful drum intro by Smith leads into a driving chops-fest known as "Wrong And Strong." Downshifting into low gear, the expressive "Tanya's Touch" is proof that these guys aren't just about technical facility. Finally, the trio pulls off a lightning fast swing pace on "Lydia's Love Van." Warning: take your vitamins for this one. Only the strong will survive!

Fusion For Miles - A Tribute In Guitar, "A Bitchin' Brew" (2005)

Fusion for Miles features some of the greatest names in progressive jazz/ fusion guitar, each paying tribute to master musician and jazz legend Miles Davis, a pioneer of modern jazz and fusion. A gifted composer and powerful band leader, Miles left this world with a legacy of phenomenal compositions, a universal reputation for introducing the world to many important jazz artists who first apprenticed under him, and a vast number of people who were touched by and learned from his stylized harmonic genius. Those musicians, whose music he influenced, were not just trumpet players but nearly all students of jazz and among them are the incredible guitarists who have come together to lift up their guitars as their voices in this unique tribute. FEATURING GUEST GUITARISTS: Eric Johnson, Bill Frisell, Pat Martino, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Mike Stern, Bill Connors, Steve Kimmock, Bireli Lagrene and Jeff Richman.

Trumpeter Miles Davis shifted gears so many times during his forty-year career that doing a proper tribute which covers the entire time frame represents a distinct challenge. Perhaps that’s why many artists have focused on specific periods in their Miles tributes. Producer Gary Guthrie put a new spin on Kind of Blue with A New Kind of Blue, while trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and guitarist Henry Kaiser’s Yo Miles! project has released three sets inspired by Miles’ ‘70s electric period. Even trumpeter Wallace Roney, while not recording a tribute album per se, has taken one of Miles’ mid-‘60s albums, Nefertiti, and used it, along with other sources, as the foundation for his own work.

In the past year, guitarist Jeff Richman has released tributes to saxophonist John Coltrane (A Guitar Supreme) and guitarist John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (Visions of an Inner Mounting Apocalypse). He's probably the first to try and put the departed trumpeter’s greater career arc into perspective. The problem is that there’s little to tie together Miles’ various periods. One reason for this is that whenever he moved into a new musical space, he often alienated much of his existing fan base. Fans of Kind of Blue are not inherently going to be disposed towards Bitches Brew, and many who discovered Miles with the pop-funk of his last decade may find his more abstract mid-‘60s quintet completely unfathomable.

Consequently Fusion for Miles starts with an immediate handicap. The bad news is that Richman’s arrangements featuring a core band of keyboardist Larry Goldings, bassist Alphonso Johnson, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta don’t go very far in finding the elusive common link. In fact, Richman often takes tunes that were the barest of sketches for example, Miles’ funk vamp of Jean-Pierre and the equally harmonically static jungle funk of his early-‘70s Black Satin and writes new passages to give them greater interest. While these radically altered and stricter arrangements give the guest guitarists more to work with, by its very virtuosity Fusion for Miles loses sight of one of Miles’ core musical goals: creating specific vibes and particular feelings.

The good news is that Fusion for Miles is one heck of a great fusion record when taken on its own merits. It features a varied bunch of guitarists who range from the post bop sensibility of Pat Martino and Bill Connors, to more clear fusion from Jimmy Herring and Mike Stern, and the rock-centric approach of Warren Haynes and Steve Kimmock. Covering material from the late ‘50s (So What) through the mid-‘80s (Splatch), every guitarist digs into the solid foundation laid by the rhythm section. Unlike Richman’s Mahavishnu Orchestra tribute, none of the core band members actually played with Miles, but the inclusion of one early-'70s Miles veteran, saxophonist Dave Liebman, on some tracks provides linkage. And while the individual tunes come from a multitude of spaces, Richman’s arrangements bring them together for an album that is sure to please fans of pedal-to-the-floor fusion to no end.

Vinnie Colaiuta is the jazz/fusion drummer's wicked 1994 first solo effort, with a surprising amount of depth in the songwriting, his ubiquitous chops, and contributions from guitarists such as Michael Landau, Dominic Miller and Mike Miller. A CD that tends to grow on you with repeated listenings, as nuances in groove and rhythm reveal themselves, as well as an appreciation for Landau's sound shock (on "I'm Twisted/Attack Of The 20lb Pizza" and "Bruce Lee"). Other guest performers include well-known musicians such as Sting, Chick Corea, John Patitucci and Herbie Hancock. An incredibly eclectic mix of jazz, rock and fusion idioms.

Tom Kennedy has been a first call bassist on the music scene for more than 25 years. He began playing the acoustic
bass at the age of 9. It was only one-year later that he and brother/pianist Ray Kennedy began building a
high-profile reputation in and around St. Louis. By his late teens, Tom had already worked with such jazz veterans
as James Moody, Peter Erskine, Bill Watrous, Barney Kessel, David Sanborn, Eddie Harris, Nat Adderly, Freddie
Hubbard, and Stan Kenton. His interest was primarily mainstream jazz, until his introduction to the bass guitar at
age 17.

Tom moved to New York City in 1984 and became involved in numerous musical projects on both acoustic and electric
Bass. He appeared on master-guitarist Bill Connors' album "Step it", and toured with the legendary jazz group
"Steps Ahead," bringing immediate recognition. Since then, his credits include performance and recordings with such
greats as Al DiMeola, Tania Maria, Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, and Steve Gadd.
Tom has truly found his home as an original member of the Dave Weckl Band, and is featured on all DWB recordings,
including: "Rhythm of the Soul", "Synergy", "Transition", "Perpetual Motion", "LIVE (and very plugged in)", and the
latest release, "Multiplicity." Tom also appeared on Dave's debut recording, "Master Plan," in 1990.
Tom released his debut solo CD "Basses Loaded" in 1997, with his second solo project, 'Bassics," which featured
jazz legends Mundell Lowe and Joe LaBarbera. He performed on guitarist Al DiMeola's release "The Infinite Desire,"
"A Tribute to Bill Evans," with Dave Grusin, and a new classical/jazz release "Two Worlds," with Lee Ritenour and
Dave Grusin. Tom also has continued his "Who's Who" list of performance credits with Joe Sample, Alan Pasqua, Ernie
Watts, Jeff Beal, Vinnie Colaiuta, Clay Jenkins, Virgil Donati, and Simon Phillips.

No, this isn't a sister project to Wang Chung, it's actually a blistering and very trippy jazz fusion blast by three old vets who've been shedding over the years in Robben Ford's band. The cover of the disc features psychedelic art and the trio's names — drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, guitarist Ford, and bassist Jimmy Haslip — in alphabetical order so that listeners don't mistake any one of them for the leader. It's just an intense ensemble disc that draws from feisty blues-rock (dig the blistering free-for-all opener, "The Hong Kong Incident") to cooler atmospheric experiments (the seductive, laid-back "Stan Key.") There are a lot of influences from '60s rock, cult music, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, down-home funky Delta blues, and a little James Brown kickin' soul as well. The wah-wah-driven, floating atmospheres of "Tengoku" lets listeners know that while these cats can blow heavy, they're happy at times just to kick back and get deep into nostalgia. Ford's balance of intense playing and strong melodicism is effective in keeping people who like good songwriting in the loop at times when it would be just as easy to just jam and forget about any structure. He also adds a decent vocal to "Going Nowhere," which is anchored in Haslip's hypnotic lines. Less effective is Haslip's robotic attempt to be like Sting on the vocal part of the all-atmospheric "In My Dream." That tune is the only real drawback to a very inventive disc of so many moods and such powerful playing.

Jeff Richman - Live At The Baked Potato Vols. 1 & 2

These two CDs feature twelve tracks of live fusion culled from guitarist Jeff Richman's gigs at the "new" Baked Potato club in Los Angeles during 1999-2000. The list of semi-famous fusion players on the covers, including Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Tavaglione, Dave Weckl, Dave Carpenter, Simon Phillips, and Danny Gottlieb, make this look like another Tone Center fusion "project" band that was thrown together in the studio and recorded before the all-star members had to go back to their real bands. However, as Richman's liner notes detail, the list of players just represents some of the LA fusion musicians he booked as the ad hoc band lineups for his regular live gigs at the Baked Potato. Many of these shows were recorded, but the players had no idea that they would ever be released. The two Baked Potato CDs present highlights of originals and standards played by Richman's various live bands. Although each CD contains only six tracks, many of these are extended live explorations and jams, so both still clock in over an hour. Most of the tunes are Richman originals, which are solid compositions, in addition to single songs written by drummer Simon Phillips and trumpeter Jeff Beal, who both play on their tunes, Marcus Miller, Jan Hammer, the Peter Gabriel 'new standard' "Mercy Street" that Herbie Hancock covered, and the Gershwin classic "I Got Rhythm." Both CDs contain a mix of tracks by six different lineups, cleverly spreading out the lineup variety on each CD. The music bounces along with an electric jazz feel, with plenty of walking bass lines and ride cymbal work, only occasionally diverging into more strident 60s fusion type sounds. The renditions of "Mercy Street," Phillips' "Dreamscape," and Richman's "Kamaroon" particularly stand out from some of the slower tempo Richman originals. Richman's sharp tone and scratchy guitar style run as the only consistent thread through all twelve tracks, effectively supporting the background rhythm when necessary and stepping up to the forefront when appropriate. These musicians are not as famous as the players in many of the Tone Center studio projects, but none of those bands were interacting live in front of an audience like the Baked Potato lineups. Fusion, like the jazz it is descended from, takes on an extra spark and life when played live, with the band members interacting and responding to an audience. Although the original songwriting is nothing landmark, both of the Baked Potato CDs have a live spark that the Tone Center studio projects just don't have, stretching and developing the tunes, and you can hear the members of the different bands interacting. Richman and Co. aren't blazing any new ground in playing or writing here, but they do give skillful and relaxed live performances of original tunes and a few standards. Both volumes of Live at the Baked Potato are great examples of really good live playing, completely pure since they had no idea it would be released. Live at the Baked Potato sounds like a really good local jazz fusion band, if you're lucky enough to live in a city that even has such a thing. If you're not, pick up both volumes of Live at the Baked Potato and chuck them in your CD changer, and you'll get a two hour set of solid fusion that crackles with live energy despite the lack of any superstar players or writers.
