Diorio, Berlin & Colaiuta - 20th Century Impressions

20th Century Impressions is a legendary recording that has long excited anyone lucky enough to have heard it when it was released in 1981 on vinyl. Guitarist Joe Diorio is in peak form along with Jeff Berlin on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. The opening track, Space Shuttle Shuffle, is a marvel of group interplay featuring Diorio's trademark intervallic improvisation and some of the best soloing from Berlin on record. Colaiuta fans will be particularly excited to hear him play modern jazz in this context without any creative constraints, pushed by two virtuosos. Flamenco Impressions highlights the group's sensitivity and is followed by a beautiful rendition of the Mancini standard, The Days of Wine and Roses, which finds the trio swinging hard. The tune also highlights Diorio's forward thinking approach to music, harmonic and rhythmic sophistication with chops unlike that of any other guitarist of his generation. In his inimitable fashion, Diorio takes it outside on the title track as Berlin and Colaiuta are inspired as well. The disc closes with the hauntingly beautiful Song for Narayani, a double tracked guitar piece. Diorio has long been a legendary figure in modern music amongst guitarists, well known for his role in music education at GIT and USC. Let's hope that 1999 will be the year when the rest of the world catches up to his outstanding talents. Recommended - (David Dorkin, Fuse Magazine).
